Selective Mutism Skills Group
A skills group for kids aged 4-12, diagnosed with Selective Mutism
What to Expect in Group Therapy:
Our Selective Mutism Skills Group provides children with a fun, encouraging environment to build confidence, strengthen social communication skills, and practice using their voices in everyday situations.
Each monthly group features a new theme designed around real-life situations that can feel challenging for children with selective mutism.
The group is grounded in principles from Parent-Child Interaction Therapy for Selective Mutism (PCIT-SM) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Through play-based activities, games, peer interaction, gradual exposure, and positive reinforcement, children are given opportunities to practice communication skills at a pace that feels achievable and supportive.
Children will never be forced to speak. Instead, we focus on creating successful experiences, reducing anxiety around communication, and helping children build the confidence to take their next brave step.
Monthly Themes
September – Back to School
Children will practice making friends, joining peer activities, raising their hand, participating in group work, self-advocating, asking for help, and communicating needs at school.
October – Halloween
Children will practice social interaction, making and playing with friends, joining group activities, and using their voices during fun Halloween-themed scenarios, including practicing saying “Trick or treat!”
November & December – Holiday Skills
Children will practice navigating larger groups and crowded environments, greeting and saying goodbye to relatives and friends, participating in social interactions, and giving and receiving gifts using polite language and manners.
